Is cremation okay for Christians?

During my ministry of almost 50 years I have officiated in many funerals.  Most of these were traditional with the burial of the deceased.  During recent years I have noticed more are opting for cremation rather than burial.  One motive for this is the cost.  The traditional funeral with burial costs several thousand dollars, while cremation may be done for under $1,000.00.

Many have ask me about the ethics of cremation.  They honestly want to know if it is okay for Christians.  There is nothing in the Bible that speaks against it.  Cremation in the Bible was usually reserved for the sinful or pagans.  “And Joshua said, ‘Why have you troubled us?  The LORD will trouble you this day.’  And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.”  (Joshua 7:25)

The pattern set by God was burial.  Moses died and, “He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.”  (Deuteronomy 34:6)  Of course, Jesus was buried in a tomb.(Matthew 27:60)

The Bible does not make an issue of cremation and we should not.  It is not condemned in the Word of God.  Ultimately, there is no difference between cremation and burying.  When the body is buried, given enough time, it will completely disintegrate.  So, cremation and burying ultimately lead to the same physical condition of complete disintegration.

My personal preference is the traditional funeral with burial.  My wife and I have  purchased our burial plots in a little cemetery in the small town of Blevins, Arkansas.  This is my preference, others prefer cremation.  Each Christian should prayerfully chose which is best for themselves and their loved ones.

GRIN AND SHARE IT: Two Little Boys

TWO LITTLE BOY’S

A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. The two were always getting into trouble and their parents could be assured that if any mischief occurred in their town their two young sons were in some way involved.

The parents were at their wits end as to what to do about their sons’ behavior. The mother had heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so she asked her husband if he thought they should send the boys to speak with the clergyman.

The husband said, ‘We might as well. We need to do something before I really lose my temper!’ The clergyman agreed to speak with the boys, but asked to see them individually. The 8 year old went to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly,’Where is God?

The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, ‘Where is God?’ Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face, ‘WHERE IS GOD?’

At that the boy bolted from the room and ran directly home, slamming himself in the closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and asked what had happened. The younger brother replied, ‘We are in BIG trouble this time. God is missing and they think we did it.’

GRIN AND SHARE IT: Last Wish

LAST WISH

A bus carrying only ugly people crashes into an oncoming truck and everyone inside dies. When they get to meet their maker, because of the grief they have experienced, He decides to grant them one wish each before they enter Heaven.

They’re all lined up, and God asks the first one what their wish is. “I want to be gorgeous.” So God snaps His fingers, and it is done. The second one in line hears this and says, “I want to be gorgeous too.” Another snap of His fingers and the wish is granted.

This goes on for a while with each one asking to be gorgeous but when God is halfway down the line, the last guy in the line starts laughing. When there are only ten people left, this guy is rolling on the floor, laughing his head off.

Finally, God reaches this last guy and asks him what his wish will be. The guy eventually calms down and says: “Make ’em all ugly again.

Contemporary vs. Traditional: The Worship Wars

(Guest Contributor: Warren Kelly)

I often find myself sitting on the fence during the Worship Wars(tm). I love loud music. I like loud, distorted guitar solos. I like to rock out on occasion — often enough that I frequently embarrass my daughter (hey, I’m just doing my job, there).

But I also really enjoy the whole “high church” worship experience. If I heard most of the music in my iTunes library done in church, I’d probably feel a bit uncomfortable. I don’t find anything wrong with it, it’s just not me.

That’s why different churches have different worship styles. The differences don’t matter enough that we should condemn each other for them, but they ARE different enough that they can interfere with our worship experience. I’ve always thought that we should let people worship with the music that they are comfortable with — as long as the teaching in their church is Biblical, there’s no problem there.

I read a couple letters recently at the Vintage Faith blog on this topic that were interesting to me:

I am no music scholar, but I feel I know appropriate church music when I hear it. Last Sunday’s new hymn – if you can call it that – sounded like a sentimental love ballad one would expect to hear crooned in a saloon. If you insist on exposing us to rubbish like this – in God’s house! – don’t be surprised if many of the faithful look for a new place to worship. The hymns we grew up with are all we need.

That letter sounds familiar to anyone who is trying to balance contemporary and traditional worship styles. In fact, there are probably a few worship leaders who think they actually GOT that letter not long ago.

That letter was written in ’63. 1863. And the name of the hymn that the folks were complaining about is “Just As I Am.” The Worship Wars(tm) have been going on a lot longer than we think, and will continue long after we’re dead. Our grandchildren will probably complain about the new songs in church — “Why can’t we sing more old classics like ‘Lord I Lift Your Name On High’? What’s wrong with the good, old-fashioned hymns that our grandparents sang?”

We need to realize what is a personal preference and what isn’t, and stop getting so wrapped up in our personal preferences.

The Romans Road To Salvation

This is the most important blog I have ever or shall ever post.  It is the simple plan of salvation that I have used for about 50 years to lead people to Christ.  I do hope that you will share this on your Facebook wall.  It will be of help to fellow Christians in knowing how to win people to Christ.  It will be your witnessing to those who have not yet been born again.  I hope you will print it and distribute to your friends or small group Bible study class.

I begin by explaining to a lost friend that the Bible is a big book.  The book of Genesis tells how things began and the book of Revelation tells how things are going to end.  The book of Romans tells people how to get to heaven.  This is the only book that we will use.  You only need to remember Romans 3:23.  You may then write next to it Romans 6:23, etc.  This is a simply map that easily guides you down the road which ends with a person accepting Christ as Lord and Savior.

1. Romans 3:23,  “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
When the Bible says that “all” have sinned that means everyone on earth.  Billy Graham and the Pope have sinned.  (Have the person admit that he has sinned.)

2. Romans 6:23-A, “For the wages of sin is death...”
Ask the person if he has ever gotten paid wages for something done.  (Let him name a job that he has done and been paid for his work.)  Explain that the “wages”/ payment of sin is “death.”  Explain that when a person dies, he is buried and is separated from his family and loved ones.  Then explain that “death” in this verse means separation from God for eternity or going to hell, the place of everlasting separation.

3. Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Explain that Jesus took the “wages of sin” upon Himself and died for us.  Since He died for us, we need not experience spiritual death.

4. Romans 6:23-B, “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Ask the person to name a gift he received last Christmas.  Then ask if he had to pay for the gift that was given.  Someone else paid for it.  Jesus paid for our salvation and it is offered as a gift.  Note that “eternal life” is “through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Ask the person if he wants eternal life or a home in heaven.  I then take off my diamond ring and have it represent eternal life.  I place the ring in the Bible.  I then inform that the only way to get the ring is to accept the Bible because the ring is in the Bible.  Heaven is within Jesus and you must accept Jesus to get heaven.  How is this done?

5. Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus (or that Jesus is Lord), and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Ask the person if he believes that Jesus was raised from the dead.  Explain we celebrate this event in a special way on Easter.  If he responds in the affirmative tell him that he is half way to being saved.  All that remains is the confession.

6. Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Ask the person to knell with you and to repeat your words from his heart.  “Dear Lord, I come to you a sinner.  I repent of my sins and now accept you as my Lord and Savior.  In Jesus name.  (Do not say amen, he will stand if you do.)  While still on you  knees ask him if he really meant that prayer.  When he says yes, ask, “According to the Word of God, what just happened to you?”  (Show him the words, “…shall be saved.”)  Then ask if he can take you by the hand and say for the first time in his life that Jesus is his Savior.  While still on your knees, thank the Lord for saving his soul.

If someone else is in the room ask the person to go tell them what just happened.  It is important that he immediately begin telling others about being saved.

Explain that after a person is saved Jesus instructs them to be baptized. This let’s the world know that you are a Christian. Tell him that you will pick him up on Sunday and take him to your church where you will sit with him.  During the invitation you will walk down the isle and introduce him to your pastor.  Let him know that everyone in the church building will be so happy about his accepting Christ as personal Lord and Savior.

Have several of your Christian friends visit or call the new convert to let him know how glad they are that he accepted Christ.

GRIN AND SHARE IT: Bran Muffins

BRAN MUFFINS

This 85 year old couple, having been married almost 60 years, had died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years mainly due to her interest in health food, and exercise. When they reached the pearly gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and Jacuzzi.

As they ‘oohed and aahed‘ the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. ,’ it’s free‘ Peter replied, ‘this is Heaven.’Next they went out back to survey the championship golf course that the home backed up to. They would have golfing privileges everyday and each week the course changed to a new one representing the great golf courses on earth. The old man asked, ‘what are the green fees?‘. Peter’s reply, ‘This is heaven, you play for free.’ Next they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisine’s of the world laid out.

‘How much to eat?’ asked the old man.’Don’t you understand yet? This is heaven, it is free!‘ Peter replied with some exasperation.‘Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol tables?‘ the old man asked timidly. Peter lectured, ‘That’s the best part…you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven.

With that the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stomping on it, and shrieking wildly. Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong. The old man looked at his wife and said, ‘This is all your fault. If it weren’t for your bran muffins, I could have been here ten years ago!

Are demons fallen angels?

My niece, Robin, requested that I post a blog on the subject of demons.  They are fallen angels.  When God created angels is not known; but, it is known that God created everything good because God, in His holiness, cannot create something sinful.  So when Satan, who was once the angel Lucifer, rebelled against God and was cast from heaven (Isaiah 14; Ezekiel 28), one third of the angelic host fell with him (Revelation 12:3-4.9).  These fallen angels are now known as demons.

Hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, according to Matthew 25:41:  “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlaqsting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”  From this and similar verses, it is clear that demons and fallen angels are synonymous.

Demons can influence a child of God, but cannot possess him.  The Bible says, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”  (I John 4:4)

The Word of God also says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”  (James 4:7)

If a Christian will stay close to God, he need not fear the devil or demons.  They will flee or run from the child of God as he resists them in the power of the Holy Spirit.

GRIN AND SHARE IT: Precious Memories

Precious Memories

The minister decided to do something a little different one Sunday morning. He said ‘Today, in church, I am going to say a single word and you are going to help me preach.’

‘Whatever single word I say, I want you to sing whatever hymn that comes to your mind.’ The pastor shouted out,’Cross.’ Immediately the congregation started singing in unison,’The Old Rugged Cross.’

The pastor hollered out ‘Grace.‘ The congregation began to sing ‘Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.’

The pastor said ‘Power.’ The congregation sang ‘There is Power in the Blood

The Pastor said ‘Sex.‘ The congregation fell in total silence. Everyone was in shock. They all nervously began to look around at each other afraid to say anything. Then all of a sudden, way from in the back of the church, a little old eighty seven year old grandmother stood up and began to sing ‘Precious Memories.’

Abraham.com

And, lo, it came to pass that the trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, ‘Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods, when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?’

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bagsshort of a camel load, but simply said,‘How, dear?’ And Dot replied, ‘I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery by Uriah’s Pony Stable (UPS).’

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And Dot said, ‘There will be a lot of banging in the land.’

And Abraham replied, ‘It is my most fervent wish that this be so.’ And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had, at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But his success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham’s drum and was accused of insider trading.

And the young did take to Dot Com’s trading as doth the greedy horsefly to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.

And, lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums, that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would only work if you bought Brother William’s drumsticks.

And Dot did say, ‘Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others.’ And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known, ‘eBay,’ he said, ‘We need a name of a service that reflects what we are.’ And Dot replied, ‘Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.

Whoopee!’ said Abraham.’

‘No, YAHOO!‘ said Dot Com.

GRIN AND SHARE IT: Wedding Vows

WEDDING VOWS

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer.

“Look, I’ll give you $100 if you’ll change the wedding vows. When you get to me and the part where I’m to promise to ‘love, honor and obey’ and ‘forsaking all others, be faithful to her forever,’ I’d appreciate it if you’d just leave that part out.” He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied.

The next day during the wedding ceremony, the time came for the bride and groom to exchange their vows. The pastor looked the young man in the eye and said, “Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?

The groom gulped, looked around, and said in a tiny voice, “Yes.” He then leaned toward the pastor and hissed, “I thought we had a deal.”

The pastor put the $100 bill into the groom’s hand and whispered back, “She made me a much better offer.”
