Have you committed the sin which can never be forgiven?

There is a sin that will never be forgiven.  Not in this life or the next.  Some call it “The Unpardonable Sin.”

Jesus cast out a demon from a man and the Pharisees said that He did this using the power of Satan.  (Matt. 12:22-24)  Jesus declared, “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men:  but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.  And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.”  (Matt. 12:31-32)

What is this “unpardonable sin”?  Jesus made it clear that all sins can be forgiven (Matt.12:31).  Adultery, murder, blasphemy and other sins can all be forgiven; they are not unpardonable. The sin that God cannot forgive is the blasphemy/rejection of the Holy Spirit’s drawing one to Christ.  It is the Holy Spirit who bears witness to Christ (John 15:26) and who convicts the lost sinner (John 16:7-11).

The Bible says, “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man.”  (Genesis 6:3)  A person can reject the conviction of the Holy Spirit so many times that the Holy Spirit is offended and never convicts that person again.  They will never be saved.

When Moses told Pharaoh that God wanted him to let His people go free, at first Pharaoh hardened his own heart.  Finally, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart.  (Exodus 5-14)

The Bible teaches in 2 Thessalonians chapter two that some would not accept the truth and be saved (vs.10) and finally they could not be saved. (vs. 11-12)  The pattern is consistent:  First “they would not”, and finally, “they could not.”

The unpardonable sin is refusing to accept Christ while being drawn by the Holy Spirit until the Holy Spirit refuses to ever convict you again.

There is a time, I know not when, a place I know not where, that marks the destiny of men to heaven or despair.  There is a line by us unseen that crosses every path, to cross that line is to separate one from God’s patience and His wrath.
