GRIN AND SHARE IT: “Lunar Message”

Lunar Message

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo project, they did some
astronaut training on a Navajo Indian reservation.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son were herding sheep and
came across the space crew. The old man, who spoke only
Navajo, asked a question which his son translated. “What are
these guys in the big suits doing?”

A member of the crew said they were practicing for their trip
to the moon. The old man got all excited and asked if he could
send a message to the moon with the astronauts.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity for the spin-doctors,
the NASA folks found a tape recorder. After the old man
recorded his message, they asked the son to translate it. He
refused.

So the NASA reps brought the tape to the reservation where the
rest of the tribe listened and laughed but refused to
translate the elder’s message to the moon.

Finally, the NASA crew called in an official government
translator. He reported that the moon message said, “Watch out
for these guys; they have come to steal your land.”

“Why did God use Adam’s rib to create Eve?”

Genesis 2:18-24 tells the well-known account of how God created the first woman, Eve, by removing part of Adam’s body and fashioning it into the woman. Many Bible scholars have translated the passages to indicate that God used Adam’s rib to create woman instead of making her from the dirt of the land, as He did for Adam. The question also arises as to why God created woman out of Adam’s rib as He did, when He apparently had formed male and female animals individually.

God used part of the male to form the female to show that they were actually the same created being, two halves of a whole. The female was not created as a separate being, second to the male. She was formed as part of the initial man, in order to be a “helpmate” for the male. Eve was brought into being to strengthen and powerfully help the male, but she was made from the same “stuff” and she was every bit as perfect a creation as man and every bit as patterned after God’s image and likeness.

The word translated “helpmate” is not synonymous with assistant, servant, minion or subordinate. The Hebrew phrase, azer k’negdo in all other instances in the Bible refers to powerful and extensive aid and support. In most cases, the phrase was used to depict dominant military forces or armed men. Other scriptures, including Deuteronomy 33:29, 7 and Exodus 18:4, use the same phrase to discuss the potent interventions and deliverances of God Himself. Woman, therefore, was created as a complement to man, as an integral part of man, and as a powerful and influential companion for man, on an equal footing with him.

Furthermore, the Hebrew word translated “suitable” K’negdo, carries much more meaning than simply suitable or appropriate. This phrase also means “opposite or contrasting.” This implies that the two beings were designed to work and fit together perfectly, not just physically but in all ways. The strengths of each compensated for the weaknesses of the other. Together, they became something far stronger and more magnificent than either of them was alone.

Why did God use a rib? A closer examination of the Hebrew also reveals another surprising element of the story. The Hebrew word translated “rib” in Genesis Chapter 2 istsela. The only other instance of the word “rib” in the Bible occurs in Daniel 7:5, but the Hebrew word used there is different. In other scriptures where the Hebrew word or its variants are used, the word has been translated “side.” For example, in Exodus 25, 27,and 35, the words tselo (variant) and tselot (plural) are used to refer to the sides of the Ark of the Covenant or the sides of the altar. Jeremiah 20:10 refers to “fear on every side.” In Second Samuel 16:13, David encounters a cursing Shimei moving along the side of a hill. In all of these contexts, translating the word tsela as “rib” would not fit the context.

This raises the possibility that the Genesis 2 passage should actually be translated as Adam’s “side,” rather than his rib. If the appropriate translation is that God removed Adam’s side, how much of his side did God remove? It is quite possible that Eve was constructed literally from half of Adam. This brings new meaning to Adam’s declaration that Eve was “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” She was more than just his bone. She was out of his flesh and bone.

God created Eve in the way that He did to show that woman has equal status in creation to man and was created to complement and in some ways complete man in the integral union of marriage. Woman was created to be “beside” man, not beneath or above him. This does not speak to the roles of male and female in the home or church, however, but to equality of status in the kingdom of God. Man is no more “worthy” of salvation, and woman is no less a citizen of God’s kingdom. They stand side-by-side in the eyes of God.

He tries to throw his arms around the horse’s neck, but he
slides down the side of the horse anyway.

The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its slipping

the horse to try and throw himself to safety.

Unfortunately, his foot has become entangled in the stirrup
and he is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as
his head is battered against the ground, he is mere moments
away from unconsciousness when to his great fortune…………….
the Wal-Mart manager sees him and shuts the horse off.

“What is the location of the Garden of Eden?”

The only thing the Bible tells us concerning the Garden of Eden’s location is found in Genesis 2:10-14, “A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold…The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.” The exact identities of the Pishon and Gihon Rivers is unknown, but the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are well known.

If the Tigris and Euphrates mentioned are the same rivers by those names today, that would put the Garden of Eden somewhere in the Middle East, likely in Iraq. It cannot be mere coincidence that the Middle East region is where the planet was most lush—the place where the Garden of Eden was. If oil is, as most scientists believe, primarily decayed vegetation and animal matter, then this is the area where we might expect to find the greatest deposits of oil. Since the Garden was the epitome of perfection, it stands to reason that the decomposition of the earth’s most perfect and lush organic materials would produce vast stores of the earth’s best oil.

People have searched for the Garden of Eden for centuries to no avail. There are various locations that people claim as the original location of the Garden of Eden, but we cannot be sure. What happened to the Garden of Eden? The Bible does not specifically say. It is likely that the Garden of Eden was completely destroyed in the Flood or that it lies decomposing into oil buried beneath centuries of sand deposits.

“What is the Gap Theory? Did anything happen between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2?”

Genesis 1:1-2 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” The Gap Theory is the view that God created a fully functional earth with all animals, including the dinosaurs and other creatures we know only from the fossil record. Then, the theory goes, something happened to destroy the earth completely—some speculate it was the fall of Satan to earth—so that the earth became without form and void. At this point, God started all over again, recreating the earth in its paradise form as further described in Genesis.

There are too many problems with this theory to describe adequately in a brief response, not the least of which is that if something important had occurred between the two verses, God would have told us so. God would not have left us to speculate in ignorance about such important events. Second, Genesis 1:31 says God declared His creation to be “very good,” which He certainly could not say if evil had already entered the world via Satan’s fall in the “gap.” Along the same line, if the fossil record is to be explained by the millions of years in the gap, that means death, disease, and suffering were common many ages before Adam fell. But the Bible tells us that it was Adam’s sin that introduced death, disease, and suffering to all life: “Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin” (Romans 5:12).

Those who hold to the Gap Theory do so in order to reconcile the theories of modern scientists who hold to the old-earth theory—the belief that the earth is billions of years older than can be accounted for by adding up the genealogies of man found in the Bible. Even well-meaning evangelicals have bought into the old-earth theory, handling much of Genesis 1 allegorically, while attempting to hold to a literal interpretation of the rest of Scripture. The danger in this is in determining at what point to stop allegorizing and begin interpreting literally. Was Adam a literal person? How do we know? If he was not, then did he really bring sin into the human race, or can we allegorize that as well? And if there was no literal Adam to introduce the sin which we all inherit, then there was no reason for Jesus to die on the cross. A non-literal original sin denies the reason for Christ’s coming in the first place, as explained in 1 Corinthians 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” At that point, Christianity itself becomes a hoax and the Bible just a nice book of stories and fables. Can we not see where this type of “reasoning” gets us?

Genesis 1 simply cannot be reconciled with the notion that creation occurred over long periods of time, nor that these periods occurred in the space between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. What took place between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2? Absolutely nothing! Genesis 1:1 tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:2 informs us that when He first created the earth, it was formless, empty, and dark; it was not finished and not yet inhabited by creatures. The rest of Genesis chapter 1 tells us how God completed the formless, empty, and dark earth by filling it with life, beauty, and goodness. The Bible is true, literal, and perfect (Psalm 19:7-9). Science has never disproved anything in the Bible and it never will. The Bible is supreme truth and therefore is the standard by which scientific theory should be evaluated, not the other way around.

Exercise

My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60.
She’s 97 now & we don’t know where she is!

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven’t
lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.

I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what
I’m doing.

I don’t exercise at all. If God meant us to touch our toes, he
would have put them further up our body.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who
annoy me.

I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

I don’t jog. It makes the ice jump right out of my glass.

“Where did Cain get his wife?”

The Bible does not specifically say who Cain’s wife was. The only possible answer is that Cain’s wife was his sister or niece or great-niece, etc. The Bible does not say how old Cain was when he killed Abel (Genesis 4:8). Since they were both farmers, they were likely both full-grown adults, possibly with families of their own. Adam and Eve surely had given birth to more children than just Cain and Abel at the time Abel was killed. They definitely had many more children later (Genesis 5:4).

The fact that Cain was scared for his own life after he killed Abel (Genesis 4:14) indicates that there were likely many other children and perhaps even grandchildren of Adam and Eve already living at that time. Cain’s wife (Genesis 4:17) was a daughter or granddaughter of Adam and Eve.

Since Adam and Eve were the first (and only) human beings, their children would have no other choice than to intermarry. God did not forbid inter-family marriage until much later when there were enough people to make intermarriage unnecessary(Leviticus 18:6-18). The reason that incest today often results in genetic abnormalities is that when two people of similar genetics (i.e., a brother and sister) have children together, there is a high risk of their recessive characteristics becoming dominant.

When people from different families have children, it is highly unlikely that both parents will carry the same recessive traits. The human genetic code has become increasingly “polluted” over the centuries as genetic defects are multiplied, amplified, and passed down from generation to generation. Adam and Eve did not have any genetic defects, and that enabled them and the first few generations of their descendants to have a far greater quality of health than we do now. Adam and Eve’s children had few, if any, genetic defects. As a result, it was safe for them to intermarry.

all those years, she would grant them one wish each.

The wife wanted to travel around the world. The fairy waved her wand and
‘poof’ she had the tickets in her hand.

Next, it was the husband’s turn. He paused for a moment, then said
shyly, “Well, I’d like to have a woman 30 years younger than me.”
The fairy picked up her wand, and ‘poof’ he was 90.

“Do pets / animals go to Heaven? Do pets / animals have souls?”

The Bible does not give any explicit teaching on whether pets/animals have “souls” or whether pets/animals will be in heaven. However, we can use general biblical principles to develop some clarity on the subject. The Bible states that both man (Genesis 2:7) and animals (Genesis 1:30; 6:17; 7:15, 22) have the breath of life. The primary difference between human beings and animals is that humanity is made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27), while animals are not. Being made in the image and likeness of God means that human beings are like God, capable of spirituality, with mind, emotion, and will, and they have a part of their being that continues after death. If pets/animals do have a “soul” or immaterial aspect, it must therefore be of a different and lesser “quality.” This difference possibly means that pet/animal “souls” do not continue in existence after death.

Another factor to consider is that animals are a part of God’s creative process in Genesis. God created the animals and said they were good (Genesis 1:25). Therefore, there is no reason why there could not be animals on the new earth (Revelation 21:1). There will most definitely be animals during the millennial kingdom (Isaiah 11:6; 65:25). It is impossible to say definitively whether some of these animals might be the pets we had while here on earth. We do know that God is just and that when we get to heaven we will find ourselves in complete agreement with His decision on this issue, whatever it may be.
